During the industrial revolution, Nottingham gained fame due to its several links with the Robin Hood legend which led to its global recognition. Additionally, its lace and bicycle making made its popularity to widen which made other nations import them to their residents.

Back in the year 1897, this city was able to be granted its city charter thus being part of Diamond Jubilee celebrations arranged by Queen Victoria. Prior to that, Nottingham was captured by the Danish Kings in the year 1867 leading to it being one of the fortified cities in Danelaw. In the 11th century, qualified contractors were able to construct its castle on a sandstone outcrop at the famous river known as leen. Around the castle many settlements were developed which were later on captured by Richard after some conflicts. Despite the setbacks, Nottingham city was able to establish itself as a sole centre for exporting religious sculpture which was made from alabaster back in the 15th century.

Due to its industrial prowess, its architects were able to come up with architectural styles with various buildings dating back in the 11th century. Old market square is the focal point of this city which is considered to be the largest in the United Kingdom. In the year 1920, Council house was built which replaced Nottingham exchange building built in the year 1726. Portland stone was the main material used to build this building.
